US Officials 'Cautiously Optimistic' About Swine Flu Spread

U.S. authorities report that the number of confirmed swine flu cases in the United States has reached 286 across 36 states. But the Obama administration says it is cautiously optimistic that the outbreak of swine influenza A H1N1 virus will be mild - at least for now.

The countries hardest-hit by swine flu - Mexico and the United States - are reporting some encouraging signs after weeks of fear that grew more intense each day. Mexican officials say the number of people contracting the virus has leveled off, and that schools and other public places will reopen next week.

Although the virus continues to spread across the United States, the extent of the outbreak remains limited and most flu sufferers report relatively mild symptoms.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano gave a "cautiously optimistic" outlook.

"We have started to see encouraging signs that this virus may be mild, and its spread may be limited," said Janet Napolitano.

At the same time, no one is declaring victory over swine flu. The Acting Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Richard Besser, said it was too early to say that the situation is under control.

Secretary Napolitano added that vigilance and concerted efforts to contain the disease must continue. She said that even if the current outbreak fades, the world may not have seen the last of the new influenza strain.

"H1N1 flu could die down soon and return later again this fall when the [northern hemisphere] flu season enters back in full swing," she said.

U.S. health officials say research is going forward that will allow development of a swine flu vaccine. But they add that no decision has been made on mass-inoculations in the United States.

At a White House social gathering on the eve of Mexico's independence day, President Barack Obama paid tribute to U.S.-Mexico cooperation in battling swine flu.

"Good neighbors work together when faced with common challenges," he said. "And that is why we are working closely with the Mexican government to identify and treat illnesses that are caused by this new flu strain. I spoke with [Mexican] President [Felipe] Calderon Saturday about this new approach."

Mexico's ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan, echoed that sentiment, saying the swine flu outbreak has again demonstrated how a productive U.S.-Mexican relationship is vital to both nations.

Swine flu cases have been reported in more than 20 nations, including Colombia - the first South American nation to see an H1N1 infection. Health officials note that, while the regular flu season has come to an end in the northern hemisphere, it is just beginning south of the equator.

What To Do With Swine Flu...

Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

...and most of all, keep an eye on one another because we are all in this together!

Randy thinks Danny could make an album like this and win the competition. Kara says she's been missing a Rat Pack-like swagger from Danny, but he found it tonight. She also thinks the end was the most creative he's been with a melody all season. Paula says it was a stellar performance, while Simon agrees with Kara about his swagger and thinks it was outstanding.
I think I am the only person who agrees with none of them!

I turned 36 on saturday, January 26th and I thought it was appropriate that it be my first blog for 2008.

Amazing... 36 years on this glorious planet and every day there is something new to be learned and do. For me, this is the year I start learning yoga. It is something I have wanted to get into for a long time but kept on putting it off. Not sure what was different this year, but I didn't even give myself a chance to blow it off. I Popped in a dvd and just started to follow along. I know it's just the beginning but it was great. There is so much more to learn and accomplish and I am really jazzed about it.

So my mother asked me, "How does it feel to be 36?" I told her as long as I look good and feel good... it's alright with me!

Friday Glorious Friday

The best day of the week by far... well except for every other thursday. Every other thursday is payday, and you have friday to look forward to!

So a busy weekend is coming up for me. I have a ton of freelance work on the horizon which is good because I need the money... don't we all. Although I do have to bring my computer into the Apple Store for some long overdue repairs first. Then of course there is the big move my girl and I are preparing for. So much to do getting ready for the big day but well worth it none the less.

Let's see what else... oh yes... my Bronx Bombers. Well last night could not have "ended" any other way. We finally break through and get the offense going only to have the game postponed until July 27th. Of course on that day they will put Farnsworth in to pitch the bottom of the 8th... he will give up 3 runs and we will lose 9-8. No no no, just feeling sorry for myself... I have faith in my team. Let's go boys there is a whole other half of ball to play.

Apartment Hunting = No Fun!

So my girl and I are out apartment hunting and all I can say is wow, what an exercise in self torture! Can I please find an apartment that advertises an eat-in kitchen... go see the apartment... and actually see that it has an eat-in kitchen?!!? Unless I plan on eating whilst standing in the kitchen, ( which I do quite often but that is not the point ) eat-in kitchens they are not. Ok so I know I am harping on the eat-in kitchen conspiracy theory but it is my blog and I'll write about anything I want.

Well I am off once again to browse the rental lists once more... I will find my eat-in kitchen... oh yes... I will.

Well it has been quite some time since my last post. I have to say this is much harder then I expected it to be... and I expected it to be pretty hard. I wrestle back and forth with the notion of what to write about. Then I consider the fact that I will be writing about ANYTHING I want. It's kind of like when you pull into a parking lot that is empty, and you still have trouble choosing a spot.

OK so I am gonna talk about my favorite baseball team, the New York Yankees. Yesterday was a DISASTER! I was at work when the game was on and kept track of things through the MLB website. Being the glutton for punishment that I am, I had to watch the replay on the YES Network later on that night. So many things going on with that team right now. Injuries... are you kidding me?!?! Hamstring injuries... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Roger Clemens. Do we really need him? Can he really help? If not for A-Rod in the month of April, how many wins would we NOT have. I know it's not a sprint but a marathon... but c'mon boys let's get it going!

Getting Started...

It is 1:48 pm on a friday as I sit at my desk at work pondering my first thoughts. Why am I starting this blog? Am I bored? Do I even know what I am talking about? For the love of God do I even have an opinion on anything?!?!

To tell you the truth, lately I feel very much like I am stuck in quicksand. Watching the world go by at a blistering pace all around me. It's funny, the faster my mind races to catch up... the more stuck I feel. Maybe that is why I am starting this blog. Maybe I just want to stop, take a good look at what is going on in the world around me and share my thoughts with whomever wants to read them.

Life is a journey and at the moment, mine has led me to this forum where maybe I can feel a little more connected to well... me.
